We import the highest-quality coffee—grown sustainably and humanely—and roast it fresh to order in Los Angeles.

We only source coffee from sustainable farms. City Bean verifies farm and working conditions with a combination of direct trade and visits to origin, importer trade with representative visits to origin and third-party certifications.
Farms providing verifiable health care for worker families and schooling for worker children are sought out and favored. Despite claims by third parties, fair labor wages are more difficult to verify; however, City Bean continues to progress toward complete transparency.
We allow for zero waste—all byproducts of the roasting process are donated to local gardeners and community gardens for composting. In addition, all City Bean bags are compostable.
WE value Relationships
We purchase our raw coffee directly from farmers and through reputable importers with direct farm relationships. We only purchase coffee with verifiable environmental standards, and strong efforts are made to ensure that the farms we partner with treat workers humanely.
Each coffee we offer has a fact sheet (example) with thorough information on the country and region of origin, altitude, co-op / farm designation, certifications, processing methods, farm conditions, and any other data available to us.
roasTING IS OUR PASSION
City Bean Roasters utilizes two vintage roasting machines, one originally built in 1926 and the other in 1963. Metal from the early and mid-1900s, especially from Germany, is superior in quality to modern metal, yielding more precise control over roasting temperatures and other variables. This allows us to further craft the coffee in the roasting process, helping each coffee reach its flavor potential.

Melding the craft of roasting with just enough technology leads to delicious coffee that drinkers become familiar with, which is important for customer retention. We have developed—and continue to develop—methods to ensure sameness with all single-cup and machine brew methods, espresso and drink preparation, sourcing, customer service, and beyond.
