Brewing Quality Coffee At Home
Coffee is unique in that, unlike wine, the drink is “processed” by the end user prior to consumption. How coffee is processed, or brewed, directly affects the ultimate quality in your cup. Please consider the following factors prior to brewing City Bean at home, so that you may enjoy the coffee as we intend:
- WATER – Coffee is 98% water. If the water is of great quality, then the coffee can achieve high quality as well. We recommend you use either filtered water or bottled water. Softened water or purified water does not make great brewed coffee.
- DOSAGE – To avoid over-extraction or under-extraction of your coffee, use two level tablespoons of coffee per six to eight ounces of water depending on your desired brew strength.
- GRIND – Coffee when ground begins losing appreciable flavors quickly, so always fresh-grind your coffee just prior to brewing. We also recommend burr-style grinders versus blade grinders. Grinding too fine or too coarse for your brew method will greatly deter your enjoyment of the coffee.
- STORAGE – Store your coffee in a cool, dry place with little airflow and no direct sunlight. Avoid storage in the refrigerator or freezer.
- FRESHNESS – Enjoy your coffee within two weeks of roast date.
- BREW TEMPERATURE – Coffee brews best between 195° and 205°F.
